Klaatu, Barada, Nikto!

Innanzitutto la barra blu col titolo della pagina (la stessa di questo post, sì...). E' il codice con cui fermare Gort (dal film Ultimatum alla Terra) dalla distruzione del suo unico occhio e permettergli di far rivivere il compagno Klaatu. A parte questo, Gort solitamente se ne sta accanto alla navetta, immobile e in silenzio.
Subito sotto, il sottotitolo è una citazione dello stesso film. La frase è stata rielaborata più volte ed è diventata tipica del genere sci-fi. Specialmente, rimanda alla serie V (o Visitors. 1983 e 2009-'11).
Il saluto iniziale, invece, è tratto dal film La fuga di Logan del 1976.
Quindi abbiamo la citazione della 4^ legge della robotica di Asimov, quella generale, la legge zero che comprende le altre 3 più famose.
Il secondo punto è il famoso incipit delle ultime parole di Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) in Blade Runner.
In terza posizione abbiamo la descrizione dei robot offerta dall'immaginaria Sirus Cybernetics Corporation da Guida Galattica per Autostoppisti. il pulsante a fondo pagina ha la stessa fonte.
Infine, una citazione tipica di Bender, l'arrogante, egoista e fin troppo sveglio robot della serie animata Futurama.
La chiosa/minaccia finale è tratta, infine, dalla nuova serie Battlestar Galactica.
So. Firstly the blue page title (yes, the same of this post). It's the password to stop the robot Gort (from the movie The Day the Earth stood still) from its one-eye-ravage and allow its to revive its fellow Klaatu. Otherwise, Gort usually stands by the spaceship, silent and unmoving.
Also the subtitle is a quote of the same film. The sentence has been re-elaborated and it's typical of the genre. Especially, it remands to the TV-movie V (or Visitors, 1983 and 2009-'11).
The greeting is taken from the 1976 Logan's Run.
Then we have the quotation of the Isaac Asimov's forth Law of Robotics, the general one that sum up the other specific three.
The second point is the famous incipit of the last sentence of the replicant Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) in Blade Runner.
In third position we have the robot description that the fictional Sirus Cybernetics Corporation from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The switch at the bottom of the page has he same front.
Finally there's the quote of Bender, the arrogant, selfish and smart robot from the animated television series Futurama.
Finally, the final gloss/threat, come from the new Battlestar Galactica.

Seguendo questo schema, oggi vi condurrò da Gort a Bender e viceversa, attraverso un altro robot.
Tutti conoscono Bender e su Wikipedia si possono trovare un sacco di informazioni su di lui e l'influenza che ha esercitato su altri media. Più difficile, invece, è capire quale personaggio archetipico l'abbia ispirato.
Se non siete dei veri nerd o abbastanza vecchi, non avrete la più pallida idea a cosa mi stia riferendo. Se sono fortunata conoscete almeno Blade Runner.
According to these scheme, today I'll move from Gort to Bender and vice-versa, through another robot.Anybody knows Bender and on Wikipedia you can find a lot of information about him and his influence on other media. What's more difficult is understand which archetypical character inspired him.
If you are not nerd/geek or old enough is possible that you have no idea of what I'm going to talk about. If I'm lucky, you know at least Blade Runner.

La prima apparizione di un robot simile si trova nel film Ultimatum alla Terra (1951), liberamente ispirato al breve racconto del 1940 di Harry Bates, Addio al padrone. Il personaggio più iconico è, senza dubbio, il robot, Gort. 57 anni dopo, nel 2008, è stato prodotto un altro film con lo stesso titolo. Non era né basato né ispirato al racconto di Bates. Era solo un remake del film originale. Onestamente, non ricordo un fotogramma di questo film se non il fatto che ci fosse Keanu Reeves nei panni di Klaatu. Più o meno la stesso mi successe con La guerra dei Mondi (2005) un libero adattamento dell'omonimo romanzo di H.G. Wells, un classico della fantascienza, e remake del primo film (1953) che seguì la più famosa e famigerata narrazione radiofonico narrata e diretta da Orson Wells (1938): fantastici effetti speciali... ma niente più. Continuo a preferire quello del 1953.
The first appearance of a similar robot is in the movie The day the Earth stood still (1951), based on the 1940 short story Farewell to the Master by Harry Bates. The most iconic character is, without any doubt, the robot, Gort. 57 years later, in 2008, another movie with the same title was produced. It was neither based on nor inspired by the Bates' novel. It was just a remake if the original movie. Honestly, I don't remember a frame of this second one but the fact that Keanu Reeves play the Klaatu's role. More or less the same that happened when I watched the War of the Worlds (2005), a loose adaptation of the HG Wells classic novel of the same name and remake of the first movie (1953) which followed the most (in)famous radio broadcast adaptation narrated and directed by Orson Wells (1938): amazement for the special effects … and nothing more. I still prefer the 1953's one.

Ciò che è più importante, per questo post, è il fatto che Gort inizialmente se ne sta buono e in silenzio per poi iniziare ad accoppre persone (solo due soldati ma gli spettatori conoscono già la sua potenza distruttiva e temono il peggio).
Quest'immagine di robot silenzioso e pericoloso -ne sono convinta- è alla base della più famosa Intelligenza Artificiale cinematografica HALL9000 fa 2001: Odissea nello Spazio: il ciclopico occhio rosso è come la sintesi del dettaglio più iconico di Gort. E' innegabile che anche il duo francese Daft Punk si sia ispirato a lui, oltre che a Guerre Stellari.
What's more important, for this post, is the fact that Gort initially stand silently and then starts killing people (only two soldier but the spectators already know its power and worry for worst).
This image of silent and dangerous robot -I'm pretty sure- is at the base of the famous cinematographic killer A.I. HALL9000 from 2001: A space Odyssey: the red cyclopic eye looks like the synthesis of the most iconic Gort's detail. It's undeniable that also the French electronic duo Daft Punk was inspired by it besides Star Wars.

Quindi, Bender nasce nel 1999 (in Italia il cartone arriva solo un anno dopo) e potete vedere facilmente come la forma sia la stessa di Gort.
Ma il collegamento non è così diretto. In mezzo c'è un altro robot. Una versione intermedia
M-11 è un personaggio secondario nel Marvelverse e fu creato nel 1954, tre anni dopo il famoso Gort. La natura dei due robot è davvero simile. Entrambi sembrano calmi ma possono fare disastri. M-11 è famigerato per aver ucciso il suo creatore. Si porta appresso, quindi, l'etichetta di robot-killer. Ma la storia è davvero triste. Per un crudele destino, l'unico modo per renderlo una I.A. dotata di libero arbitrio e sentimenti in un periodo di tempo troppo breve era di uccidere il suo creatore con una scarica elettrica, in un complesso processo di migrazione di coscienza. Con la conoscenza del suo creatore e il senso di colpa per il suo crimine involontario (a cui il suo creatore l'aveva costretto), M-11 lascia il laboratorio e scappa verso il mre, tentando il suicidio. Rimarrà là per diversi anni, finché gli Agenti dell'Atlas non arriveranno (nel 2006) a recuperarlo e ripararlo. Quindi, dopo diversi upgrade, eccolo che comincia a parlare, bestemmiare e sparare come un guaglioffo qualsiasi.
Con M-11 possiamo vedere facilmente la trasformazione occorsa tra Gort e Bender.
So, Bender was born in 1999 (in Italy the cartoon arrived one year later) and you can easily see how the shape is the same of Gort.
But the link is not so strait. In the middle there's another robot. An intermediate one.
M-11 is a secondary character in the Marvelverse and was created in the 1954, three years after the famous Gort. The natures of the two robots are really alike. Both seems quite but they can be crushing. M-11 is infamous known to have killed its own creator. He was labelled as a robot killer. But its story is really sad. For a cruel destiny, the only way to make him an A.I. with free will and emotions in a short time was to electrocute his own creator at the end of an elaborate process of conscious migration. With the knowledge of his creator and the guilt for his accidentally crime (his creator forced him to do it), M-11 left the lab and walked into the sea, trying to suicide. There he laid for several years, until the Agents of Atlas came, in 2006, to rescue and restore him. Then, after several upgrade, he start talking and swear and shoot as a badass.
With M-11 we can easily see the transformation occurred between Gort and Bender.

PS: Nel film Thor, il Distruttore (nato nel 1965), con il suo unico occhio incendiario, ricorda in tutto e per tutto Gort... anche se forse è più simile al Gort del 2008
